Welcome to the UN Watercourses Convention (UNWC) Online User’s Guide

This website was created to make the UNWC User’s Guide [PDF] more widely accessible and is intended for anyone wishing to gain more insight into the content and relevance of the Convention’s text.

The UNWC  is a global treaty adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. It is a framework convention governing international watercourses.

The User’s Guide and this accompanying website were designed to give the tools and information to make the Convention and its role more widely known, in the hopes of a swift entry into force of the UNWC.

On this website, you will find:

- An easy to navigate Article-by-Article guide to the UNWC, including in-depth analysis of the text of the Convention, definitions of key terms, and explanations of important theoretical/practical aspects of the UNWC

- Case studies analysing the role and relevance of the UNWC in regions around the globe

- Multimedia resources, including videos by experts in the relevant fields of water law and policy from around the world

- Concise and informative Fact Sheets

- Quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding of the Convention
